TitleWoods, Andrew William: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date4 May 2017
DescriptionCertificate of candidate for election
CitationAndy Woods is distinguished for his elegant application of fluid dynamics to a variety of geological, industrial and environmental problems. He has shown how turbulent dusty plumes in the atmosphere carry volcanic ash to great heights, a major concern for air transport, and used that insight to model buoyant mixing of oil escaping from the Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico. He has applied fluid dynamics to understand and model natural and forced ventilation in buildings. Through his inspiring intellectual leadership of the BP Institute for Multiphase Flow he has forged outstandingly successful links between academic and commercial enterprises.
