TitleBanfield, Jillian Fiona: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date9 May 2018
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Jullian Banfield as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers.
CitationBanfield’s seminal research has addressed both the mineralogy/geochemistry of near-surface terrestrial environments and their microbiology. The research has targeted mining-impacted systems, groundwater, sediments, lakes and soils.
Most importantly, her work has addressed the connections between geochemical and biological processes in novel ways. She has asked questions that had not been considered previously and introduced methods that have changed how microbial ecosystems are studied. Her laboratory is highly regarded for work in both mineralogy and the genomics-based study of microbial communities and she has trained many of the scientists who are the leading practitioners in these fields.
