Title | Marais, Richard: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 9 May 2018 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Richard Marais as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed off by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Marais has been instrumental and influential in elucidating the effects of cancer-causing mutations in the RAF family of protein kinases. He and his colleagues demonstrated that the V600E mutation activates BRAF by destabilising the inactive protein to create an oncogene that promotes tumour growth and progression. Marais' findings have significantly advanced our understanding of cell signalling and opened new areas of research culminating in the development of anticancer drugs that target RAF kinases and are effective in melanoma. He is at the forefront of developing personalised medicine, where treatments are tailored for individual patients, to improve cancer outcomes. |
