TitlePachnis, Vassilis: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date9 May 2018
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Vassilis Pachnis as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed off by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationUnderstanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underpin the functional architecture of complex neural circuits remains a major challenge in biology. Research during the last decades has uncovered many molecular and signalling cascades that control the generation and connectivity of neurons during development into functional networks. Within this framework, Vassilis Pachnis' work has made fundamental contributions in elucidating how the vertebrate nervous system's functional organisation is influenced by non-neuronal tissues and how its activity contributes to organismal physiology and homeostasis. In order to uncover general rules and principles that govern the contextual assembly of such networks, his studies have focused on the neuroglial networks of the gut and the inhibitory circuits of the forebrain, two parts of the nervous system which are critical for human health but remain poorly characterised. His research has identified genetic cascades and molecular nodes which drive neuron and glial development, integrate network formation into the broader organogenesis and are implicated in the pathogenesis of congenital and acquired neural deficiencies.
