DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Graham Richards as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed off by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationGraham Richards was the first of what became known as computational chemists. After perfecting accurate calculations on small molecules, he pioneered the application of these techniques to drug discovery. He was the initiator of many of the methods now regarded as standard in the pharmaceutical industry, such as the application of computer graphics and molecular similarity based on massive data bases of molecules, nowhere better exemplified than in his screen saver project which involved 3.5 million people in over 200 countries. He was awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry Award for Theoretical Chemistry and the American Chemical Society Award for Computers in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Research. Richards also founded the very successful company Oxford Molecular Group Plc and several other thriving commercial ventures.
