Title | Swanton, Robert Chrales: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 9 May 2018 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Charles Swanton as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed off by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Swanton is a clinician scientist who combines his clinical trials practice as a thoracic oncologist at UCL Hospitals focussing on drug resistance with his scientific work on cancer genome instability and evolutionary biology. Swanton's work has demonstrated that solid tumours follow a branched evolutionary course with profound heterogeneity displayed within primary tumours and between primary and metastatic sites of disease, explaining the intractable nature of metastatic disease and the inevitability of cancer drug resistance. His work has revealed cellular processes that initiate branched evolution paving the way for new therapeutic approaches to limit tumour adaptation and drug resistance. |
