TitleHofmann, Albrecht Werner: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date9 May 2018
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Albrecht Hofmann as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Foreign Member and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed off by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationAlbrecht Hofmann has made seminal contributions to mantle geochemistry by using isotope and trace element abundance ratios to understand mantle melting and mantle evolution. He was first to recognize that ocean crust recycling is a primary mechanism for generating chemical mantle heterogeneity. He was also first to show that a primitive-mantle reservoir either no longer exists or else is not sampled by present-day magmatic processes. He first identified "canonical" trace element ratios in volcanic rocks, which are powerful discriminators between subduction and intra-oceanic magmatic environments. These ratios are also diagnostic of sediment recycling and of crustal contamination in mantle-derived volcanic rocks erupted on continents.
