Title | Darby, Sarah: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 28 March 2019 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Sarah Darby as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Sarah Darby has obtained and analysed data answering questions about the impact of ionising radiation on disease. She showed that there was no evidence to support public concern that cancer risks following low doses had been substantially underestimated. She developed quantitative estimates of the lung cancer risk from radon and of the heart disease risk from radiotherapy. She showed that radiation-related risks usually multiply the underlying risks rather than adding to them and that radiation-related risks last much longer than previously realised and are possibly lifelong. These concepts have important public health implications and have been incorporated into international guidance. |
