Title | Kendall, John-Michael: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 28 March 2019 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of John-Michael Kendall as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | John-Michael Kendall is a seismologist who has made seminal contributions to our understanding of the structure and dynamics of Earth's interior using a combination of theoretical and numerical analyses of seismic data, with particular focus on seismic wave anisotropy. He was a pioneer in the characterisation of the core-mantle boundary layer. His large-scale geophysical experiments in Canada and East Africa have shed considerable light on the structure and break-up of continental crust, in particular the role of partial melt. His theoretical work on anisotropy has found widespread application in academia and industry, notably in mechanical evaluation of oil reservoirs and understanding of plate tectonic processes. |
