Title | Mayer, Mark Lee: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 28 March 2019 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Mark Mayer as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Mark Mayer is internationally recognized for seminal work on glutamate receptor channels. He has made ground breaking observations that profoundly changed our view of receptor function and excitatory synaptic transmission in the brain. His discovery that NMDA receptors are calcium permeable ion channels subject to voltage dependent channel block by magnesium provided, for the first time, a mechanism for coincidence detection at synapses in the brain. His work uses X-ray crystallography and Cryo-EM to study molecular details of glutamate receptor function revealing the structural basis for subtype selective assembly, ligand recognition, and molecular mechanisms for allosteric regulation and desensitization. |
