Title | Peto, Julian: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 28 March 2019 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Julian Peto as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Professor Peto's discoveries span 40 years of asbestos epidemiology. He identified the statistical flaws underlying earlier regulations, he was the first to estimate the dose-specific cancer risks, and industrial and environmental risk assessment for asbestos is still based on his original mesothelioma and lung carcinogenesis models. He predicted the mesothelioma epidemic, and his asbestos lung burden studies now predict its end from the gross decline in environmental exposure in Britain. His work contributed directly to reducing exposure limits and subsequently to the European asbestos ban. He has also made seminal discoveries in cancer genetics, HPV research and cervical screening. |
