Title | Sockett, Renee Elizabeth: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 28 March 2019 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Liz Sockett as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Professor Sockett is a distinguished international authority on the genetics, biochemistry and cell biology of predatory bacteria and their interactions with pathogens. Her pioneering work has provided unparalleled insight into the mechanics of predation by Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus, demonstrating how this small bacterium attaches to other Gram negative bacteria, invades and reseals them, killing and consuming them from inside in a novel niche that amounts to a "private dining room" where other bacteria cannot share those nutrients. These studies of predation have revealed hitherto unsuspected cellular processes of bacterial growth and metabolism that are of the utmost importance at a time when traditional antibiotics are rapidly becoming ineffective. She has demonstrated how predatory bacteria provide an opportunity to apply a "living antibiotic" approach to combat human pathogens that are resistant to conventional antibiotic therapy, an approach that she has validated and extended to the experimental control of foodcrop and animal infections. |
