TitleStaskawicz, Brian John: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date28 March 2019
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Brian Staskawicz as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Foreign Member and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationStaskawicz is a pioneer in plant/microbe interactions. He was first to clone "avirulence" (recognized effector) genes from plant pathogens, and show their role in virulence, including the first TAL effector. He was among the first to clone plant resistance genes that encode intracellular NLR immune receptors, before such mammalian immune receptors were discovered, and has provided unique insights into NLR receptor mechanisms. He was first to show NLRs from one plant species can protect another, showing pepper Bs2 protects tomato against Xanthomonas. Since 1987, his unwavering insistence on excellence at the Sainsbury Lab in Norwich greatly contributed to UK science.
