Citation | William Campbell's contributions to science have had a major impact on both human and veterinary medicine. With colleagues he developed six drugs, most notably thiabendazole and ivermectin. For his pioneering role in the use of ivermectin to prevent human river blindness he shared the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology in 2015. The administering of more than a billion doses has resulted in the virtual elimination of river blindness in the Americas and in vast regions of Africa. He has also developed novel treatments for lymphatic filariasis, elephantiasis, and canine heartworm disease. |
