Citation | Donna Strickland's co-invention of Chirped Pulse Amplification has revolutionised laser science and enabled a wealth of new applications. The incredible peak powers that optical pulses generated using this method can reach has led to advances in medicine and industry, as well as fundamental science. Her invention enabled researchers to extend the frontiers of atomic and molecular physics, laying the ground for attoscience, laboratory astrophysics, laser accelerators, inertial confinement nuclear fusion and coherent control of molecules. Her work has also had impacted surgery, materials processing and research into new energy sources, bringing new and important capabilities to these fields. |
