TitleKivelson, Margaret Galland: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date14 April 2020
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Margaret Kivelson as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Foreign Member and citation giving the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationMargaret Kivelson has made seminal contributions to our understanding of the structure and dynamics of the magnetospheres of Earth, Jupiter and Saturn as well as of the properties of Jupiter's moons. Her leadership of the NASA Galileo magnetometer instrument led to her most influential contributions relating to Jupiter's icy moons, including the discovery of an intrinsic dynamo field and subsurface ocean at Ganymede and a liquid subsurface ocean at shallow depth at Europa. These discoveries have directly resulted in follow-on spacecraft missions to Jupiter's moons, the recently selected ESA JUICE mission to Ganymede and the upcoming NASA mission to Europa.
