Citation | Sadaf Farooqi is distinguished for her discoveries of fundamental mechanisms that control human energy homeostasis and their disruption in obesity. She demonstrated that the leptin-melanocortin pathway plays a critical role in the regulation of human food intake, food preference and autonomic function and is the primary mechanism by which obesity leads to hypertension. Her demonstration that eating and associated instinctive behaviours are regulated by physiological signals has wide-ranging consequences for understanding the biology of human behaviour. Her discoveries have directly enabled diagnostic testing for genetic obesity syndromes and life-saving treatment for people with severe obesity. |
