Date | 21 April 2021 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Vernonica Franklin-Tong as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Professor Franklin Tong is renowned for her studies on the cell biology and biochemistry of pollen. In particular, she has developed - almost single-handedly – poppy as a tractable model system for the study of mechanisms that underpin self-incompatibility (a genetic phenomenon that assures outbreeding). The resultant major discoveries have revolutionized our knowledge of cell-cell recognition, regulation of pollen tube growth and have served as a paradigm for understanding key aspects of signalling pathways and programmed cell death in a variety of other plant systems. |
