Title | Hall, Geoffrey: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 21 April 2021 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Geoffrey Hall as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Professor Hall is distinguished for pioneering work developing silicon detectors and electronics for particle physics experiments, especially in crucial radiation hard applications to tracking detectors at the LHC. To achieve this goal required systematic investigation of the physics of radiation effects and technologies enabling major discoveries, especially in the CMS experiment, notably observation of the Higgs boson in 2012. His recent innovative work on detector designs and exploitation of programmable digital electronics for real-time measurements will considerably extend the physics reach of the LHC. His work has benefited particle physics experiments worldwide and other imaging applications.Professor Hall is distinguished for pioneering work developing silicon detectors and electronics for particle physics experiments, especially in crucial radiation hard applications to tracking detectors at the LHC.
