Citation | Fiona Marshall is known for her discoveries in the field of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). Her early work included cloning of the GABAB receptor, providing demonstration that GPCRs may function in multiprotein complexes, and the cloning of two families of receptors activated by cellular and microbial metabolites. Together with her scientific team at Heptares, she solved de novo X-ray structures of numerous GPCRs revealing multiple unexpected allosteric binding sites. These structures have enabled structure-based drug design leading to a pipeline of drugs in clinical development for diseases including Alzheimer's disease and cancer. Her work is an impressive example of how basic academic science can be translated into healthcare benefits and commercial success. |
