Date | 21 April 2022 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Martin Dawson as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Martin Dawson is an international leader in applied photonics, prominent in the translation of physics research into new technology. He has made wide-ranging contributions to the development, application and market introduction of semiconductor-based photonic and optoelectronic technologies, especially via research collaborations with industry. Martin has pioneered micro-LEDs for scientific instrumentation, communications and display applications, demonstrating this technology’s compatibility with CMOS electronics which underpins major developments in commercial displays; he has made broad and foresighted contributions to photonics based on single-crystal diamond, developing precision processing techniques for diamond and demonstrating its unique characteristics for optical devices including micro-optics and lasers; he is a pioneer of high-power and high-brightness optically-pumped semiconductor lasers, making extensive demonstrations of their application as tunable sources for spectroscopy and nonlinear optics. Martin is Head and Scientific Director of the UK’s first Fraunhofer research centre and he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2007). |
