TitleCampbell, Philip Henry Montgomery: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date21 April 2024
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Philip Campbell as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationSir Phillip Campbell is distinguished by his powerful influence in adapting the procedures and values of science to a rapidly changing world. His period as Editor-in-Chief of Nature, which he led superbly as the world’s preeminent science magazine, has coincided with major challenges and opportunities created by the digital revolution, the interdisciplinary imperatives emerging from global challenges, the diversification in the range and location of the global scientific effort and the increasing need for effective review. He used the pages of Nature as a platform to lead debate on these issues, rather than merely reflecting opinion, and has engaged in close dialogue with the scientific community in promoting change. He has championed emerging scientific disciplines, including through companion journals, as well as in communicating the value of science for public policy. No other contemporary scientific journal editor has had his influence. He has a self-effacing leadership manner, and strong international influence. He is deserving of election to the Fellowship, where his expertise would continue to be invaluable to the Society.
