TitleCarter, Andrew Philip: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date21 April 2024
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Andrew Carter as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationAndrew Carter is distinguished for his fundamental contributions to understanding the structure and mechanism of cytoplasmic dynein, a complex molecular motor that transports cargoes within the cell. His work combined protein crystallography, electron microscopy and single-molecule biophysics with new methods developments to explain how dynein uses the energy of ATP hydrolysis to move along microtubules. Andrew elucidated the molecular basis by which the large dynactin cofactor interacts with dynein and stimulates its activity. He discovered that adaptor proteins, responsible for selecting specific cargoes, directly regulate long-range transport and revealed the structural basis for their interaction with the dynein-dynactin complex. Recently, by determining a structure of an axonemal dynein, which powers the beating of cilia, he discovered a novel regulatory factor he termed Shulin, that is required for dynein delivery to growing cilia.
