Citation | Paul Elliott is distinguished for improving public health worldwide through his use of rigorous and innovative methods and teamwork approach in setting up and leading large-scale, in-depth epidemiological studies – providing the necessary empirical evidence for effective public health actions. His landmark INTERSALT study defined the importance of sodium in raised blood pressure. In a recent randomised trial in China, he showed definitively that a lower sodium, higher potassium salt substitute reduces cardiovascular disease events. His findings triggered policies to lower sodium intakes and blood pressures around the world, preventing deaths and disability in hundreds of thousands of people. Among other pioneering large-scale research, he is Director of the UK Small Area Health Statistics Unit and designed, set up and leads the REACT programme of community prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection among over 3 million people in England. REACT contributed hugely to our understanding of COVID-19 and the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants. REACT is also illuminating the key features of Long COVID. |
