Date | 21 April 2024 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Maria Harrison as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Maria Harrison founded molecular genetic studies on the beneficial interaction between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and plants providing foundational knowledge on how mutualistic plant-fungal interactions are established and how they are sustained to allow nutrient exchange between plant and fungus. Her work described the channels that reside on the plant membrane allowing acceptance of fungal derived phosphate and ammonium, the delivery of lipids from the plant to feed the fungus and the molecular mechanisms that activate a genetic programme allowing accommodation of fungal intrusion into plant cells. This work gives foundational understanding of mutualistic interspecies interactions within the natural world. |
