CitationFrances Balkwill OBE, FMedSci, is a pioneer of research into cancer-related inflammation and the tumour microenvironment. She has made paradigm-shifting discoveries on the role of cytokines in cancer promotion, that led to clinical trials. She is an expert on ovarian cancer and currently studies microenvironment regulation and combination biological therapies using novel pre-clinical models. Frances has a parallel career in public engagement with science and received the 2006 Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize. She has written twelve and edited six childrens’ science books with an estimated 500,000 books printed and ten foreign editions. She founded and directs Centre of the Cell, a unique informal science learning centre for young people with over 239,000 participants to date.
