Description | Certificate endorsing election of David Komander as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | David Komander has discovered proteins that assemble, recognize and remove specific ubiquitin signals, unveiling the remarkable complexity of the ‘Ubiquitin Code’ beyond protein degradation, and how its deregulation drives human disease. He discovered OTULIN, a missing piece in linear ubiquitination, and showed that its loss causes a potentially fatal autoimmune syndrome. He provided a complete molecular picture of mitophagy regulators PINK1, Parkin and USP30, and deep understanding of ubiquitin signalling in Parkinson’s disease. His work has illuminated the importance of ubiquitin in modulating cell function and has laid the foundation to understand, and eventually treat, cancer, inflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases. |
