TitleBentley, David Leonard: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date21 April 2024
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of David Leonard Bentley as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationDavid Bentley has made an outstanding contribution to our understanding of how RNA processing is coordinated with control of RNA synthesis by RNA polymerase II (RNAPII). Bentley’s work on elongation and termination by RNAPII has shown that transcriptional activators and enhancers, previously thought to act exclusively at initiation, can also regulate elongation, which is limited by a bottleneck that terminates transcripts prematurely near the transcription start. He has shown that the RNAPII C-terminal domain (CTD) is a coupling device that coordinates transcription with pre mRNA processing through its ability to recruit RNA processing factors. This led him to propose an “mRNA factory” model in which coupling works by direct binding of mRNA processing factors to the RNAPII CTD. His recent work provides compelling evidence that the speed of RNAPII is a critical factor that modulates co-transcriptional events. Bentley’s work has stimulated an area of research at the interface of transcription and mRNA processing that continues to grow.
