Citation | Pat Monaghan leads the field in identifying the determinants of individual life histories and aging rates in wild vertebrates. Her early work on birds showed for the first time that the energetic costs of egg formation and incubation are important determinants of clutch size. Her subsequent pioneering studies have demonstrated how early life circumstances influence subsequent phenotypes, ageing rates and longevity. She also discovered that telomere length is predictive of subsequent lifespan, and, through laboratory and field experiments, how telomere loss is accelerated by faster growth, older parental age and more stressful environments. |
