Title | Peck, Lloyd Sammuel: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 21 April 2024 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Lloyd Peck as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Lloyd Peck is a globally leading polar marine biologist whose research focuses on the adaptations of cold adapted species living at the edge of existence, and how these adaptations limit their abilities to respond to environmental change. Lloyd is distinguished for his work demonstrating that very slow growth and development in polar marine animals is linked to fundamental problems making proteins. He made major advances in understanding the extreme thermal sensitivity and poor resilience to change in polar species. He identified the link between high latitude marine gigantism, environmental oxygen availability and its rate of use in organisms. Lloyd is deeply committed to increasing public and stakeholder awareness of polar issues and climate change as evidenced by his televised Royal Institution Christmas lectures in 2004 and subsequent international lecture tours that in total reached over 100 million people, plus his contributions to major television productions including “Frozen Planet”, “Blue Planet” and “Life in the Freezer”. His contributions have been recognised by the award of a Polar Medal by the Queen in 2008 and the PLYMSEF Silver medal in 2015. |
