Date | 21 April 2024 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of José Penadés as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Professor Penadés has redefined the concept of mobility in bacterial genetics. He discovered the most powerful modes of transduction described to date: lateral transduction and lateral cotransduction. He demonstrated that via these mechanisms, the mobility of the bacterial chromosomes exceeds that of elements classically considered mobile, forcing a re-definition of what a mobile genetic element is. He has also discovered and characterised the mechanism of transfer of a widespread and clinically important family of genetic elements, the Phage-Inducible Chromosomal Islands. His inventive work has made fundamental and dogma-changing contributions to knowledge of molecular mechanisms of microbial physiology, pathogenesis and evolution. |
