Date | 21 April 2024 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Xiaodong Zhang as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Xiaodong Zhang is noted for her outstanding contribution to our understanding of macromolecular machines, especially those involved in transcription and DNA damage signalling and repair. Her work on the bacterial transcription machinery provides fundamental insights into how RNA polymerase, the central transcription enzyme, is silenced by the major variant sigma factor, how transcription is activated by AAA activators, and how DNA is loaded and unwound during transcript initiation. She has made major contributions to our mechanistic understanding of AAA proteins and DNA repair pathways, through the study of key components, including p97, the INO80 chromatin remodeller, and Tel1/Mec1 kinases. |
