Date | 21 April 2024 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Yakir Aharonov as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Foreign Member, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Yakir Aharonov made visionary and profound contributions to the foundations of quantum mechanics and has discovered multiple fundamental quantum effects. The Aharonov-Bohm effect fundamentally changed our understanding of the way quantum particles move in electromagnetic fields. It was the first discovered quantum nonlocal effect, and it is central to our modern understanding of gauge fields. With David Bohm FRS, he appreciated the importance of entanglement long before it came to prominence, and first proved the existence of entanglement between distant particles. He similarly pioneered the study of many quantum phenomena which laid the ground for quantum information science. |
