Citation | Rosakis is a highly interdisciplinary engineer who invented multiple high-speed diagnostic methods for studying failure phenomena in all length and time scales, enabling his seminal discoveries of Intersonic fracture and delamination in composites and Supershear rupture in frictional geological faults. He introduced the concept of Laboratory Earthquakes and used scaling to resolve paradoxes in earthquake science and to study earthquakes worldwide. His vision gave birth to an interdisciplinary school of thought at the fertile interfaces between Experimental Mechanics, Earthquake Source-Physics and Hazard Mitigation, leading to his election to the US National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Sciences. |
