TitleSchulze-Lefert, Paul: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date21 April 2024
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Paul Schulze-Lefert as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Foreign Member, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationPaul Schulze Lefert made seminal contributions to our understanding of how plants detect and activate their innate immune defences in response to pathogens, thus arresting pathogen proliferation. He revealed mechanisms that drive co-evolutionary changes in hosts and pathogens, defined secretory pathways for extracellular defense, and discovered how plant breeders have harnessed these processes. He pioneered reductionist approaches for investigating causal relationships in plant interactions with their root and leaf microbiomes and discovered mechanisms that enable microbial community assembly despite the plant immune system, revealing beneficial functions of the bacterial microbiota for indirect pathogen protection and plant nutrition.
