Citation | Paul Schulze Lefert made seminal contributions to our understanding of how plants detect and activate their innate immune defences in response to pathogens, thus arresting pathogen proliferation. He revealed mechanisms that drive co-evolutionary changes in hosts and pathogens, defined secretory pathways for extracellular defense, and discovered how plant breeders have harnessed these processes. He pioneered reductionist approaches for investigating causal relationships in plant interactions with their root and leaf microbiomes and discovered mechanisms that enable microbial community assembly despite the plant immune system, revealing beneficial functions of the bacterial microbiota for indirect pathogen protection and plant nutrition. |
