Citation | Thiemens discovered mass-independent fractionation of atmospheric oxygen and sulphur. With this he reinterpreted meteorite data and the formation of the Solar System. He developed new ways of tracing chemical reactions in the atmosphere including the formation of ozone. He overturned understanding of Earth’s atmospheric history and the build-up of oxygen, as well as the development of life on Earth. His work on atmospheres and oceans has provided unique insight into climate, using ice cores, rocket-borne sampling of upper atmospheric oxygen species to examine stratosphere and mesosphere photochemistry cycles, and quantum photochemistry experiments to fundamentally understand the effects. |
