Title'General' correspondence relating to Tristan da Cunha islands
Date24 January 1962 - 29 April 1968
DescriptionCorrespondence filed as 'General' at the time of the expedition, and continued to be classed under this heading once the expedition had returned. This has led to a wide variety of correspondents and subjects being mixed together. Examples of correspondence include: letters to and from interested parties in the UK such as Professor Kennedy at Leeds University with updates on the expeditions progress; papers sent to George Hemmen by scientists not accompanying the expedition and arrangements for meetings between expedition members, as well as the redistribution of transparancies and reprints following their return to the UK. The file contains letters referring to a luncheon held to thank the Navy for their assistance, and an image of the plaque presented to HMS Jaguar as a token from the Royal Society.
There are a large number of letters to and from the public. They relate to subjects such as postal covers from Tristan da Cunha, which appear to have been very popular with collectors, the return of the Tristan Islanders, and requests for information on the expedition as well as images. Letters show that where possible postal covers have been supplied to enquirers.

Some later letters between George Hemmen and Ian Gass [Tristan da Cunha expedition leader], refer to the Aden and Red Sea Islands volcanological project, although there is a mention of work done on Tristan, which explains why copies were made for this file.
