TitleSolomon Islands expedition - papers filed as 'general'
Date1962 - 1968
DescriptionPapers and correspondence filed by Royal Society expeditions staff under 'general'. They have been filed as up to December 1964 (1) and from January 1965 (2), although for cataloguing purposes they are being considered as one file. The earlier papers in this file largely concern information gathering on the Solomon Islands, as well as the beginnings of planning an expedition of this nature. There is correspondence with the Overseas Geological Survey, members of the Southern Research Zone Committee and others with an interest in or knowledge of the Solomon Islands. Included in the file are letter from the public wondering if there were places available on the expedition. In addition to this there is a hand written preliminary report from future expedition leader E J H Corner on his trip to the Solomon Islands in 1964, a provisional expedition programme and lists of publications on the Solomon Islands loaned to the Royal Society as they began planning the expedition.
The second file contains similar items, a plan for an expedition to Mt Gallego in the Guadalcanal province and further correspondence with regards to information about the Solomon Islands. Later correspondence relates to talks and lectures following the return of the expedition party and a very limited number of invoices. In addition to this there are letters from D R Stoddart regarding sources of funding for carbon dating his collections.
Both files contain a number of internal Royal Society memos, often between George Hemmen [expedition officer] and D C Martin [exeuctive secretary].
