Description | The Atomic Energy Research Establishment near Harwell, Oxfordshire, was the main centre for atomic energy research and development in the United Kingdom from the 1940s to the 1990s. It was establised in 1945 by John Cockcroft as a research laboratory in order to further the use of atomic reactions for generating energy
In 1954 AERE was incoporated into the newly formed United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). Harwell and other laboratories assumed responsibility for atomic energy research and development.
Although Simon's research work on atomic energy took place during the years of the Second World War, Simon retained an interest post-war in atomic work and acted as a consultant to Harwell and was a member of the Atomic Energy Authority Technical Committee.
Material arranged into the following 7 files:
File 1: General correspondence with the Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE), Harwell, 1946-1948 File 2: General correspondence with the Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE), Harwell, 1949-1950 File 3: General correspondence with the Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE), Harwell, 1951-1952 File 4: General correspondence with the Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE), Harwell, 1953 File 5: General correspondence with the Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE), Harwell, 1954 File 6: Miscellaneous correspondence with the Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE), Harwell, 1946-1954 File 7: Correspondence with Sir John Cockcroft, Director, Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE), Harwell, 1945-1954
The material is mostly made up of correspondence relating to research work at Harwell and on requests by Simon for samples of metals for his own research work. Other topics discussed include: Simon's service on the Harwell Power Committee and his research work on the colouration of diamonds. |
