DescriptionThanks for letter about Council's decision on G G F Newton - hopes Council will pay Newton for a further 5 years and that this will not be conditional upon assurance that Newton would have University post in five years' time - gives details of the organisation of his department - comments on refusal of the General Board of the University to ask for money to implement request that E P Abraham be made a Reader - no chance that Newton and other will get University appointments - comments on this - discusses work on antibiotics being done by Abraham and Newton and importance of maintaining their partnership - gives details of steps he has had to take to shut down research on atheroma and on lymphocytes, because of shortage of senior research posts - comments on his decision, on advice of the Council, not to patent certain steps in extraction and purification of penicillin - wanted to patent work in order to provide stable positions for his collaborators.
