DescriptionSummaries of letters between German astronomer Heinrich Christian Schumacher (1780-1850) and Sir John Frederick William Herschel, made by the latter, likely as a calendar of exchanges related to his time as Foreign Secretary to the Astronomical Society.
The notes are headed 'Schumacher - Palmville, Altona, by Hamburg', each letter is preceded with a reference (H1;S1; H2; S2...) marking the correspondent H = Herschel; S=Schumacher.
H1. dated April 1821 - announcing the election of Schumacher as Associate to the Astronomical Society, and announcing his theory of Saturn's satelites as the prize subject for 1821.
S1. acknowledgment dated April 17 1821.
S2. circular and note with letters to be forwarded to Wollaston, Brinkley, Brewster and Kater.
H2. not dated, various points related to the communication and publications of the Astronomical Society
S3. answer to H2.
S4. Forwarding Pfaff's request regarding to William Herschel's works.
H3. Answer to S3 and S4 and material for Pfaff. - n.b.: sent about Oct. 1823
S4. A letter from Mr Schumacher dated Nov. 22 1823 containing various queries and acknowledging receipt of books for Pfaff.
H4. dated London Jan 15 1824, answer to S5. Regarding various publications Frauenhofer's micrometer vindicated to Troughton on Mr South's testimony. Gauss' mode of dertermining powers of telescopes &c. Directing Molineyx to consign Col. Fallon's clock with Schumacher's care. Announcing his resignation from the post of Foreign Secretary and further correspondence should be addressed to the Foreign Secretary.
Final note: H4 abstracted before sealing the letter.
