TitlePaper, on atmospheric waves, by William Birt
CreatorRadcliffe Birt; William (1804-1881); astronomer; meteorologist
Date1 April 1848
DescriptionHandwritten, dated and signed manuscript by William Birt, marked 'not for publication' at the top left corner. Reflections on Birt and Herschel's joint researches on atmospheric waves. Birr is expressing his doubt that the term and theory of 'atmospheric wave' reflects the physical phenomenon accurately, justification on the basis of the latest research, in particular by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove. Figures in text capturing the wind and barometric changes to illustrate the 'wave'. Proposes that a ship staying on the margins of the wave as it manifests itself on the ocean could carry out useful measures, and would be safe enough staying out of the epicentre.
