Title | Nomenclature of variable stars, by Norman Pogson |
Creator | Pogson; Norman Robert (1829-1891); astronomer; Madras Observatory astronomer. |
Date | 1860 |
Description | Handwritten notes on the nomenclature of variable stars. Criticises the use of the discoverer's name such as Pogson II as it conveys "no allusion either to time or position and are therefore the worst designations for celestial objects". Criticises Argelander's nomenclature: " this scheme becomes bankrupt when nine variables have been found in one constellation, and already we have reached U in Gemini, V in Virgo and W in Capricornus". Suggested method is to prefix Var before the order of discovery in each constellation retaining standard names. Followed by a series of examples. Notes that the decision will impact naming on a forthcoming publication currently with engraver Basire. Likely enclosure from HS/14/1. |
