Title | Copy letter, from Sir John Herschel to Hudson Gurney, dated at Slough |
Creator | John Frederick William Herschel |
Recipient | Gurney; Hudson (1775–1864); antiquary; verse writer. |
Date | 19 February 1831 |
Description | Copy of letter, copied as part of the correspondence project led by Colonel John Herschel FRS following the death of his father. Has received the Hudson Gurney's Memoir of Thomas Young. Requests again that the types of Herschel's manuscript criticism of Young's scientific work be taken down and the existing copies destroyed. A fuller and longer work would be necessary to cover adequately Young's work, Herschel does not have the time for it and the shorter existing notes would not do justice to either Young or Herschel. Does not consider the six week's work as wasted as has given Herschel opportunity to improve his knowledge of Young. Any deeper critique of Young's writings would be improper and would only become stronger, further hurting Mrs. Young's feelings. |
