DescriptionContaining indexes, lists and instructions for the copying of Sir John Frederich William Herschel's correspondence by his son, Colonel Sir John Herchel. It also contains Copying book volume O covering letters between 30 July and 21 October 1822 already catalogued in HS/19.
The indexes and lists were drafted and used by Colonel Sir John Herschel to navigate the copy-books of outgoing letters and keep track of which original letters had been sent to him, was copied and returned.
The box includes a draft of the cover letter sent to correspondents in the view to borrowing the letters is included as well as Colonel Herschel's transcription guidelines providing background information on the volumes 20 to 27 of the Herschel correspondence.
