Title | Letter from W [William] Whewell, Trin[ity] Lodge, [Cambridge], to [Sir John Frederick William] Herschel |
Creator | Whewell; William (1794-1866); British mathematician |
Date | 9 April 1864 |
Description | Whewell returns Herschel's sixth 'Iliad' by book-post. He likes it very much and has little to say on it. He gives line by line suggestions, commencing at line 55. 'J.G.L.' is [John Gibson] Lockhart, who has published two books of 'The Iliad' in hexameters. Whewell agrees with Herschel that to a good ear, hexameters which are too dactylic can be offensive, but these are the most acceptable to the common reader for their rhythm. He is sorry that Herschel does not give a better account of himself as Lady Herschel. His wife will send her good wishes to William [James Herschel]. |
