TitleLetter from William Henry Bateson, Fylingdales, Whitby, to Sir John [Frederick William] Herschel
CreatorBateson; William (1812-1881); British college head
Date13 August 1867
DescriptionHe is obliged to Herschel for the copy of his translation of [Friedrich von] Schiller's 'Spaziergang', which has been forwarded from Cambridge. He has with him the volume of Schiller containing this poem and he has been comparing the hexameters and pentameters with the German original. The idea themselves and the form of words in Schiller are far removed from the simplicity and epigrammatic qualities of Latin Elegaics, He was surprised to see the skill and force in Herschel's rendering. He has no Latin books to assist his memory, but he notes unusual long and short syllables in 'Cybele' and in other words. He hopes Herschel will excuse his doubts on such points and thanks him with sincere pleasure.
