| Description | Having been occupied for the past few days, he has kept the proofs of Book 2 of 'The Iliad' longer than intended. He has read and re-read it with admiration of Herschel's dealing with hexameter difficulties. He has succeeded in retaining the simplicity of the Homeric style. Holland has made a few notes on suggestions, which he outlines. He asks if he could prevail on Herschel to dine with him, in order to see a painting from a sketch made by him on the spot fifty years and eight days ago. He visited the Asiatic Olympus just forty-nine years after sleeping on the ascent of the European Olympus. He continues with his line by line criticisms, but says he must not go further in pettyfogging suggestions. He hopes to follow the third book. |
