| Description | He thanks Herschel for the completed Book 2 [of 'The Iliad'] which he has satisfaction in reading again, in a final form. He admires the rigour that Herschel has applied to the Catalogue. He is nearer to conversion to the English hexameter than ever before. Holland had pleasure in listening to a lecture by one of Herschel's sons on Friday night. It gave a good augury of continuing the Herschel name into the third generation. The only criticism he had of it was in seeking to put too much into one hour of time. If Herschel's son should come to Town, Holland would like to make his acquaintance. In a postscript, Holland states that he has just heard of a telegram to the Foreign Office on the arrival of [John Hanning] Speke in Khartoum on the Nile. He hopes they have gained the solution of the problem of that river [the source of the Nile]. |
