Description	He welcomes the gift of the volume of Herschel's translation of 'The Iliad' and is sensible of the value of the reference to his help in the preface. He has now looked at the translation of various select passages, especially Books 19 and 22, and has seen how much Homeric character that Herschel has given them, and his happy management of hexameters. Herschel has gone far to convert Holland to hexameters and the preface contains excellent thoughts on their reading. He gives an example. He hopes that a second edition might remove the italics. Holland returned a week ago from his seventh trip to the United States of America, partly spent in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He had visits to both political parties which violently agitate the country, which point to some future great breaches to its Constitution. Living with Mr. [William Henry] Seward in Washington he saw much of the President and his ministers. He has not been able to unravel the complexities of American politics, despite several visits, two of which were during Presidential elections.
